Langley At The Double For ‘Cote
Hucclecote 14 – Clifton 7
Hucclecote scraped through to the semi-final of the County Cup with a two tries to one victory over Clifton.
In weather conditions that veered from sunshine to hailstorms both sides struggled to make any headway in a match that was dominated by both sides’ defences.
Playing with the wind in the first half Hucclecote found themselves penned back in their own half. With skipper Oliver proverbs marshalling the defence Clifton’s attacks failed to make headway and eventually Hucclecote were able to exert some pressure of their own.
Midway through the half Clifton cleared their lines with a kick downfield that was taken by ‘Cote full back Ed Jones. Callum Drummond took over and took the ball deep into the Clifton 22, before releasing it to Kieron Langley to outpace the defence and score by the posts. Drummond converted.
‘Cote should have gone further ahead just before the break, having gained a three to one overlap Drummond went for the line, but was swamped by the Clifton defence.
Langley was on the score sheet again after 10 minutes of the second half, powering his way down the touchline and through two attempted tackle before cutting infield to score under the post. Drummond added the conversion.
Clifton rallied strongly and launched a series of attacks, penning Hucclecote into their own 22. They got their reward with an excellent try which saw their backs work an overlap before scoring in the corner, A superb touchline conversion closed the gap to seven points.
With time running out the Clifton onslaught continued and a promising attack down the right wing was snuffed out by a terrific Harry Kirkham tackle.
The match ended with Hucclecote encamped on the Clifton line, but unable to add to their point tally. They go on to a likely semi-final clash against St Mary’s on 22 April.
